The Bengal Rose Society was established in 1980, inspired by the vision of Late Swami Gouriswarananda (Ramamoy Maharaj) of Jairambati and Late Dr. Sivaprasad Bandyopadhyay. The society aimed to disseminate knowledge of rose culture in the plains of West Bengal, building upon the region’s rich heritage of rose breeding and cultivation.

Bengal (including parts of Jharkhand, during British India) has had a tradition of rose culture and breeding and is closely connected with the history of modern roses. The Indian Botanic Garden in Sibpur (now known as Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden) played a significant role in this narrative, serving as a sanctuary for the stud china roses that introduced remontancy in roses before their export to Europe.

Historically, rose cultivation was a pursuit reserved for the elite, but the Bengal Rose Society has pioneered innovative techniques that have made it possible for people from all walks of life to enjoy rose culture. By developing methods for growing roses in pots, both with and without soil, the society has democratized access to this beautiful aspect of horticulture, enabling everyone to appreciate the beauty and fragrance of roses.
